Super Falcons of Nigeria lose 0-1 to South Africa in opening game of Women’s AFCON

The Super Falcons of Nigeria began their title defence with a 0-1 loss against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria lost 0-1 to the Bayana Bayana of South Africa in their opening group game of the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) on Sunday, November 18.

The Super Falcons started their campaign at the 11th edition of the AWCON with star players Desire Oparanozie, Asisat Oshoala and Rita Chikwelu.

Reigning African Women’s Player of the Year Oshoala was the star attraction as she collected a yellow card and played Oparanozie through on goal only to blaze over the bar.

The second half did not provide much excitement either as there were few chances for both sides which proved to be a difficult encounter for both sides.

South Africa however found the breakthrough in the 85th minute through Thembi Kgatlana as they held on for all three points.

The result means that Nigeria began their title defence with a loss as Zambia take on Equatorial Guinea in the next encounter.

The Super Falcons take on Zambia in their second group encounter on Wednesday, November 21 at the Cape Coast Stadium.
