Titled: “Camelot/3000”
On second thought, let’s not go to “Camelot/3000.” ‘Tis a silly place …
There’s nothing quite like the legend of King Arthur. Well, nothing unless you add some other Legends to it.
Our time-traveling misfits are headed back to the era of Camelot, undoubtedly to race the Legion of Doom for another piece of the Spear of Destiny. The villain team is even more formidable with Rip Hunter on its side, and has proven to be a step ahead of the Waverider crew ever since it “persuaded” Hunter to change teams.
You have to like the title of tonight’s episode, too, as it’s a sly callback to a DC Comics maxi-series from the mid-’80s. Yes, I’m old enough to remember it.
Detroit, in the year 3000. Rip Hunter drops in on someone who has been guarding one of the fragments of the Spear of Destiny, the former Doctor Midnite of the Justice Society. And even hiding the fragment inside him isn’t going to stop the very determined Rip.
The Legends are departing for the future too, even though Nate has his reservations. They’re too late anyway. All they find is Doctor Midnite’s body and Rip’s name written in blood.
Back on the Waverider, Amaya lays into Sara for stopping Jax from killing Rip. Gideon is on the track of another Spear fragment in ancient Britannia. And Stein “borrowed” something from Midnite’s future office.
The rest of the team is off to Britannia, where they’re quickly surrounded by knights … led by Guinevere. She takes them back to Camelot, where they meet King Arthur and meet his Merlin — who turns out to be the JSA’s Stargirl. Wait, what?
Of course, Courtney is in Camelot because of the Spear of Destiny, and she recalls how the JSA’s final mission was led by Rip Hunter. He split the Spear into four parts, taking one for himself and splitting the other three between different eras, each protected by a JSAer.
Where’s King Arthur? Out getting himself captured by Damien Darhk and Rip. The Legends are partying it up in Camelot, and Ray makes friends with Sir Galahad. The King returns, but under the control of the Legion of Doom, and he immediately takes Stargirl captive at knifepoint. The Legends try to rush the bad guys, but Arthur stabs Galahad, and the bad guys tell our heroes they have to give up the Spear fragment or they’ll return with more knights under their control. Also, Galahad looks kind of dead.
With Arthur mind-controlled, Guinevere needs to rally the Knights of the Round Table, but she is having a crisis of self-confidence. Stargirl points out to Vixen that her team couldn’t safeguard Doctor Midnite, so she’s not giving up her piece of the Spear.
Stein is already working on a solution to defeating the Legion’s mind control tech, which happens to be based on the same gizmo he took from Midnite. As Darhk and Hunter prepare to make their move, Stein hits a roadblock but does at least realize the villains are on the march.
Guinevere finds her heart and rallies her troops. Ray is even inspired, but Nate sees a picture of a dead knight in one of his old books that looks like Ray and has a bad feeling what might happen. Oh, and this Camelot also has an Excalibur, one that Vixen realizes has the tip of the Spear, and she’s able to remove the sword from the stone with her animal powers. Alas, Stargirl shows up just as Amaya and Sara try to leave with it…..
