Gabon has banned travelling at night on the main national road after an accident on Saturday night left 17 people dead, reports the BBC French service.

Kenya imposed a similar ban in 2014 on public vehicles travelling at night in an attempt to curb the high number of  fatalities on its roads.

The ban was however overturned after a successful challenge in the courts on the grounds that it was unconstitutional to restrict people’s movements.

The court also directed the government to find alternative ways of reducing road carnage that do not infringe on people’s rights.
