As the “LMD” arc continues on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the most compelling question revolves around the mystery of Melinda May and whether she will ever free herself from Dr. Radcliffe’s clutches. Helpfully, this episode starts with a flashback, showing exactly how May was kidnapped and replaced by an LMD. Five days ago, apparently ahead of the final mission against Eli, May told Radcliffe that she fully intended to destroy the Darkhold after they finished their mission. Radcliffe responded by calling AIDA and ordering her to initiate something called the “Sunset Protocol.” The whole thing sounded a bit like Order 66 from Star Wars, with similarly disastrous effects for May – sent to Radcliffe’s lab, she was unexpectedly sedated by AIDA and replaced with her ready-made robot duplicate. Radcliffe initially tried to keep May calm with a simulation of a relaxing day at a hot spa, but the quietude was too much for May – leading to her failed breakout attempt last week. This flashback cycle ends back in the present day with an unsettling revelation from Radcliffe, however: They’ve already deployed a second LMD. Who could it be?
A prime suspect is Mack, who is finally consummating his relationship with Yo-Yo. Almost the moment after they have sex, Mack gets a mysterious text and starts lacing up his boots. He’s not going on the new mission, but won’t say where he is going. Yo-Yo is understandably confused.
The mission itself is rather complicated. As a public member of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daisy has to go before a congressional committee to sign the Sokovia Accords and make clear that everything is “aboveboard.” Simmons is nervous that Senator Nadeer will be there, but that’s the whole point: While she’s distracted talking to Daisy, Coulson and Yo-Yo will sneak into her office and plant surveillance. General Talbot doesn’t like this plan – he insists that everything at S.H.I.E.L.D. really does have to be squeaky clean, because if this plan fails, they’ll look nefarious, and it will give Nadeer new ammunition against them. Coulson points out that they’re already lying to people about Mace’s powers and moves forward with the plan, to Talbot’s chagrin……
