Titled: “The Laws Of Inferno Dynamics”
‘Quantum cells, flaming skulls, and androids. Just another day at S.H.I.E.L.D.’
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. really took the momentum of last week’s incredible episode and drove it into an explosive resolution of a few season-long plotlines. Let’s discuss.
After being almost entirely absent from last week’s episode, Eli Morrow is all over this one. When the episode begins, he’s become quite a resident supervillain, complete with a lair inside a fortress surrounded by loyal henchmen in the form of Chinatown gangsters. When one of those lackeys tries questioning the feasibility of taking on S.H.I.E.L.D., Eli turns his guts to unrefined diamonds for kicks. Then he turns back to his mysterious project, which is … a blue rectangle surrounded by a box of orange energy? We’ll find out more later, but the device isn’t exactly self-explanatory.
Outside the compound, S.H.I.E.L.D. is plotting their raid. Mace is still queasy about using Daisy and Robbie, given the potential bad optics, but as Coulson points out, they are the big guns. Mace wants to use AIDA instead, at which point Coulson makes the dubious decision to inform Mace that AIDA is an android. Mace has a totally understandable reaction that more people in this show probably should have had: “Doesn’t anyone remember Ultron??” But everyone just shrugs it off, and the plan becomes having AIDA run the mission while Coulson’s strike team (Daisy, Robbie, and Yo-Yo) goes in after Eli. It’s Secret Warriors 2.0, baby!
It turns out that Yo-Yo has never heard the word “recon” before, which explains why she’s pretty bad at it; she triggers a fiery booby trap immediately upon entering the building where Eli’s sequestered. Being rather impervious to fire, Robbie goes in next and fights his way through a few gangsters. Fitz and Simmons realize that the trap was made out of flammable caesium. Given Eli’s previous experiments with carbon, they realize that Eli must be working his way up the periodic table. An engineer to the core, Eli is clearly experimenting with the extent of his new Molecule Man-like powers. He gets another chance when he finds Robbie wandering around inside his battery thing. Robbie tries to ghost out, but Eli impales him to the wall. Turns out a gigantic stake through your heart is a big obstacle even for Ghost Rider. Robbie’s not moving anywhere for a while, which gives him and Eli some much-needed family bonding time…………
