Customs authorities in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, have confiscated a container carrying more than 1,000 rifles, said to have been illegally imported from Turkey, the BBC’s Hausa service is reporting.

Customs officer Hamid Ali said the discovery was made on 6 September during a routine check of containers at the Tincan Island harbour.

Talking to the media today he said the container had been registered as carrying “hand wash basins”.

Mr Ali told reporters that two people had been arrested in the operation.
