Security stepped up in DR Congo’s capital

Security forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo have stepped up their presence in the capital, Kinshasa, as opposition supporters gear up to challenge President Joseph Kabila’s failure to organise elections on time.

Overnight, additional military and police checkpoints have been set up.

Mr Kabila’s term in office formally expires today, but elections to choose a successor have been postponed because the electoral register is not up to date.

Talks with the main opposition bloc, mediated by church leaders, have failed to reach a compromise; a further attempt is due on Wednesday.

More than 50 people died in street clashes in September.
