Beyoncé stormed Sunday’s BET Awards with an electrifying surprise performance of “Freedom” at the top of the show. But just like that, she was gone, and didn’t stick around to accept her four trophies on the night.

Her mother, Tina Knowles, remained at the show to speak on behalf of her daughter. The first time she hit the stage, Knowles said Beyoncé had to fly to London to begin the European leg of the Formation World Tour. However, Bey doesn’t commence the tour until Tuesday, and in Sunderland, England, not London. After fans brought those details to light, Knowles addressed Bey’s exit on Instagram.

“First of all I did make a mistake on the city and the day,” she wrote in a two-part Instagram post. “I asked why did she have to leave early and was told by a member of her staff that ‘she had to get back in time for her concert’ and that she actually should have been there 2 days before, as the tour has been down for a month I assumed the date was Monday and the city was London.”

Knowles said she was “hurt and disappointed” at the skepticism of her claim, because Beyoncé went out of her way to play the BET Awards. “Although everyone told her this is going to take a toll on your tour because you will only have one day to rehearse and you and the dancers will have been off for a month,” Knowles continued. Beyoncé’s schedule, per Knowles, required her to rehearse in Los Angeles for the show Thursday, head to Mexico Friday for the birthday party of sister Solange Knowles, then resume rehearsals Sunday at 7 a.m. in L.A.

Tina Knowles then decried how stories swell around celebrities. “We start lies and false rumors about our entertainers we celebrate when they stumble, we hope that they fall. We put them against each other when it’s room for them all!” she writes. “I am sorry this is soo long but I had to get it off my chest! You guys are soo sweet and understand please!”
