All eyes will be on Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman as he prepares for his first major test with Atletico Madrid in today’s Copa del Rey quarter-final clash against Real Betis at the Estadio Benito Villamarín.
Lookman is expected to make an immediate impression, having been named directly in Diego Simeone’s first-choice starting XI ahead of the encounter. The Nigerian winger, who recently joined from Atalanta, has wasted little time settling into life in Spain.
During his first training session, Lookman operated both on the left flank and as a second striker, showcasing the pace, intensity and attacking purpose that convinced Atletico to secure his signature. His intelligent movement off the ball and sharp combinations with Álex Baena hinted at a player ready to make a decisive impact for Los Rojiblancos.
Simeone’s initial line-up featured Juan Musso in goal, with Pubill, José Giménez, Dávid Hancko and Matteo Ruggeri forming the back line. The midfield included Giuliano Simeone, Marcos Llorente, Johnny Cardoso and Lookman, while Thiago Almada and Julián Álvarez led the attack.
As the session progressed, Baena replaced Almada, prompting Lookman to move into a more central role. Fellow new signing Mendoza partnered Koke in midfield and impressed with his composure and vision, while another recent arrival, Vargas, was not involved in the test XI.
The training session carried added significance, with around 50 Atletico ultras in attendance to rally the squad and underline the importance of approaching the Copa del Rey with full commitment.
Speaking upon his arrival in Spain, Lookman made no secret of his excitement, revealing he was eager to make his Atletico Madrid debut against Real Betis, an opportunity that now awaits him under the lights in Seville.
