Kenya and Libya were mentioned during the highly anticipated US presidential debate between the Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton and her rival Donald Trump of the Republican Party.

Mr Trump, a real estate businessman, mentioned Kenya, alleging that Ms Clinton had started the smear campaign against President Barack Obama by spreading the rumour that he was not born in the US.

He said that a close aide to Ms Clinton had sent a reporter to the East African state to get evidence that Mr Obama was born there.

Libya also came up in the debate as the two candidates traded barbs on who supported the removal of former leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Ms Clinton, who was the US Secretary of State during the Nato-backed overthrow of Col Gaddafi in 2011,  pushed back on Mr Trump’s claims that the intervention in Libya showed her lack of judgement by saying that the businessman also supported his removal from power.

Ms Clinton also alleged that Mr Trump had done business with the killed Libyan leader.
