Hourman (Patrick J. Adams) and Citizen Steel (Nick Zano) will be a part of The CW’s DC Comics series for season two, so here are seven other JSA candidates that would be a welcome addition to the Waverider.
Now that Rex Tyler aka Hourman (Patrick J. Adams) has arrived on Legends of Tomorrow, the possibilities are endless when it comes to introducing other Justice Society of America members on The CW DC Comics series.
The last scene of the Legends of Tomorrow season one finale featured Hourman arriving on a Waverider of his own to warn the Legends team that if they boarded theirWaverider with the mission of becoming Time Masters themselves, they would all die. His arrival signaled a major shift for the series, one that executive producer Marc Guggenheim confirmed to The Hollywood Reporterat the time.
“With his final words in the finale, he planted a pretty deep flag about where we’re headed in season two, which is not just introducing Hourman but introducing his teammates in the Justice Society of America,”Guggenheim said. “For comic book fans, everyone knows the Justice Society is really the precursor to the Justice League, so it’s a pretty big move in our DC universe here on TV.”
For the uninitiated, the Justice Society of America, or the JSA, was first introduced in 1940’s All Star Comics #3, though it wasn’t until the Silver Age of comics in 1961 that the JSA was retooled to become the Justice League of America. New rules were then set to differentiate the two groups: the JSA was established as the superhero team up from Earth-2, while the JLA came from Earth-1. This allowed for cross-pollination between the two universes and teams moving forward.
So what does this mean for season two of the Arrow-verse’s newest series? It opens the story up to many iconic DC comics characters. In addition to Hourman, Nick Zano has joined the cast of Legends of Tomorrowas a series regular for season two, playing Dr. Nate Heywood. Nate is a historian whose grandfather was Cmdr. Steel, a member of the Justice Society of America. In the comics, Nate becomes Steel/Citizen Steel, a member of the Justice League of America, although there’s no word on if Zano will get to portray the superhero his character is fated to become.
It is interesting to note that the original founder of the JSA is Jay Garrick, a character who The Flash viewers have already met … twice. After a fake-out back in the season two premiere that turned out to be the villain Zoom (Teddy Sears) posing as Jay Garrick, the real Jay arrived in the season two finale as the doppelganger of Barry’s (Grant Gustin) deceased father Henry Allen (John Wesley Shipp). While the original speedster and founder of the JSA is on The Flash right now, that could lead to some potential crossovers between The Flashand Legends in the future.
And we can’t forget that another founding member of the JSA is Carter Hall aka Hawkman (Falk Hentschel), and member Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee), who are both taking a leave of absence from the team so they can live normal lives with each other for the first time after defeating Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) in the season one finale.
In addition to all the JSA members that have already been introduced or are set to be introduced, here are seven others from the comic book lore that would be a welcome addition to the Waverider in season two.
7. Green Lantern
A founding member of the JSA, Alan Scott was the very first Green Lantern. Although the big screen attempt to bring the Green Lantern to life was a box-office failure, this is the perfect opportunity to try again with this iconic superhero.
6. Sandman
Wesley Dodds was another founding member of the JSA. He was also the first Sandman, before that moniker was adopted by other superheroes in later eras. He was known for using a gun that emitted a sleeping gas to sedate criminals.
5. Spectre
Another founding member of the JSA was Jim Corrigan, aka Spectre. Jim, the human host, sometimes walked the line between good and evil, as he tried to control his counterpart, Spectre. It could be fun to see a JSA member struggling with the dark side on Legends.
4. Doctor Fate
Kent Nelson was also a founding member of the JSA. The sorcerer/superhero also helped found the Justice League of America, so introducing him on Legends would then offer the opportunity to connect the DC TV series with the film franchise, as they currently remain separate.
3. Atom
While Legends already has an Atom in Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), JSA founding member Al Pratt could also be introduced. He was the first superhero to fight crime as the Atom, and initially had no superpowers. He could be Ray’s ancestor, giving viewers a glimpse into Ray’s history.
2. Power Girl
Power Girl was the JSA member known as Kara Zor-El, a name that should sound familiar to all comic fans whether they read the comics or just watch the TV shows. Power Girl is the Earth-2 version of Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), so introducing her on Legends would make for an easy crossover with Supergirl, The CW’s new acquisition from CBS.
1. Mister Terrific
Mister Terrific has technically already been introduced to the Arrow-verse, but not by his superhero name. Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum) recurred last season on Arrow, and has been promoted to a series regular for season five, indicating his role will be expanded this year. Seeing as how he has the potential to become this iconic JSA character, here’s another perfect opportunity for a crossover event between the two series.
