The midfielder was bettered by the Real Madrid star at Euro 2016 and now feels his exploits for club and country sees him as the strongest candidate for the award

Paul Pogba has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d’Or due to his title-winning form with Real Madrid and Portugal.

The Madrid star scored the winning penalty as rivals Atletico were beaten in the Champions League final via a shootout, before guiding his country to a first ever major tournament win in Euro 2016 this summer.

Ronaldo watched long-time rival Lionel Messi pick up his fifth Ballon d’Or in January, ending his two-year streak to boost his overall tally to three.

But Pogba feels Ronaldo deserves to be awarded for his exploits thus far this season.

“You have [Lionel] Messi, you have Ronaldo. Honestly, I like them both. [Antoine] Griezmann has had an amazing year,” he told ESPN Deportes.

“For me, it’s Cristiano Ronaldo [who should win], because he won the Champions League and Euro 2016.”
