When we first find them, of course, Sam and Billy are naturally making competing Star Wars references as they try and fail to ride Segways. Unfortunately, their party doesn’t last forever. A couple of thugs show up and succeed in capturing Billy. Sam delivers the news to Coulson in unforgettable fashion: “This is Agent Koenig. They’ve got Agent Koenig.”
Billy Koenig has been kidnapped because Coulson had entrusted him with the Darkhold. Knowing that, Radcliffe apparently directed Senator Nadeer’s henchmen to his trail. And now, they’re locked up together, Billy and Radcliffe. A thug comes in and threatens Billy for information on the Darkhold, but Billy is unfazed. He tells the goon, “Koenigs don’t break,” and, “We’re programmed to take pain” – this episode has a lot of fun blurring the lines between humans and robots, specifically the Koenigs. Radcliffe apologizes, saying he put these guys on Billy’s trail before they locked him up, too, and Billy compares the temptation of the Darkhold to Gollum in The Lord of the Rings. Soon enough, the real bad guy (Zach McGowan) enters.
For a sci-fi show that has battled gods and robots, this guy doesn’t look very frightening. But he certainly has an aura about him – helped by the strange way he sips vodka out of vials and sniffs onions. According to him, “the old ways are better.” Much of this episode is set up as a sort of debate between humans and robots and how they intersect. This guy is firmly on the side of humans in this scenario. He even calls himself “the superior man” – which means he’s probably “The Superior” Nadeer’s been mysteriously referring to. The Superior peels an onion, telling Billy he too will get taken apart “piece by piece” if he doesn’t talk. Then, to further prove just how metal he is, the Superior proceeds to break the vodka vial in his hand. He takes a shard and makes to cut out Billy’s eye with it – at which point Radcliffe unties himself, revealing his captivity was just a ruse meant to trick Billy. Radcliffe doesn’t want Billy to be damaged. He asks the Superior for permission to go inside Billy’s brain himself.
Fitz is also currently trying to get inside a brain. Back at base, he’s been trying to get information out of the………………….
